Not that punishing people from combating bullying isn't bad
enough.
Let's see... in Civilized Countries, for very good reasons
(summed in my understanding):
A: Abuse is not a right. Some forms of abuse
are punishable as criminal offenses.
B: Defense is a right. This is
commonly protected by Law.
Yet... quite often, the message Societies send
is:
If you defend yourself against a bully, you will be punished.
I
honestly wonder if there's a claim of a human rights violation in that
position.
To show the above (not the criminal, that should be obvious to
anyone that considers physical assault) - Universal Declaration Of Human
Rights:
Article 3: Everyone has the right to life, liberty and
security of person.
Article 7: All are equal before the
law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the
law.
True... that doesn't come right out and say:
You have the
right to defend yourself.
But really... the first line of defense when
there is no authority around is YOU!
Canadian
Charter Of Rights And Freedoms:
7. Everyone has the right to
life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived
thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental
justice.
Again, no specific mention of a right to self defense.
Criminal Code of Canada on Self
Defense:
Every one who is unlawfully assaulted without having
provoked the assault is justified in repelling force by force if the force he
uses is not intended to cause death or grievous bodily harm and is no more than
is necessary to enable him to defend himself.
So why do our
Societies teach defending oneself is so very wrong? Our educational systems
utterly fail:
keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall
strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and
freedoms
We really, really, really could use more awareness of this
lack of knowledge being brought to our elected representatives so at least the
public education system instructs in the concept of basic human rights including
what I view as the most basic in order to be civilized: the right to defend
oneself.
I urge everyone to do as I do and speak to their elected
representatives about this very issue every chance you get.
If we - in
the most civilized of Countries - can't even follow such basic principles... how
can we ever hope to convince others to?

Maybe you might wish to write, as I have, and express your concerns over the
principals suitability for the job.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

The superintendent could have apologised, cancelled
the suspension and
admitted to his mistake. It would
have been a non-story that was forgotten a
day later.
Instead, he has got his name associated with an
incompetent attempt
at a cover up that will be all over
the internet during the weekend. Perhaps
his next
story was that this excellent demonstration of what
happens when you
will not admit to making a mistake
was his plan all along.
