I'm fairly sure they could, if they wanted to; but that would let people get off
the upgrade treadmill.

And while both v6 and v-latest would have no trouble reading a v5 file, only
v5.1+ could read the newer format.

Even then, that change only happened because of MS - rather than make tables
intelligent, they changed it so a word document could contain an excel document
(or a graphic document, or whatever whatever), and WordPerfect had to change
their format so it could embed or be embedded.

Actually, I think that's one of the few good ideas that's come out of Microsoft,
but then they didn't bother to implement it properly... what do you expect :-)
