... for what will surely be a totally underwhelming announcement of something that the world does not need, or want, or care about.

Someone will have to clear up the mess, and take the unsold product somewhere for recycling, just like the Kin.

Barnes & Noble stock recovering

If that is not a coincidence then it is quite interesting as it would mean that
the world outside of FOSS is not enamored with patterning with MS. That or
B&N stock largely held by Linux fans, I suggest that is unlikely.
