Y'know, it'd be nice - but they are highly profitable -
here's my prediction.
1. M$ will prove to be an utter failure in developing new
products for the consumer market and will waste billions and
billions of dollars. Its consumer Windows monoploy will
decay gradually for ~8 years and then, possibly, nosedive.
2. Much handwringing will ensue.
3. M$, through no fault of its management, will grow revenue
in business at a reasonable clip and eventually eat Oracle's
lunch.
Rationale: M$'s corporate culture is very business-friendly
and far more willing to implement 'evil/management-friendly'
features than other vendors and/or FOSS. M$'s culture is
also somewhat more friendly to innovation/development than
Oracle. Besides, business still keeps Cobol programmers
occupied...so the Windows monopoly will shift over geologic
intervals.
Hopes: I could be wrong - and Google Apps may strangle
business software as a market more rapidly than I expect.
