Here's a couple:
1.The desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed
esp. by the generous donation of money to good causes.
2.A
philanthropic institution; a charity.
Now.... you see... I don't have
problem describing what the Gates Foundation does as fitting the image of
Capitalism. No matter how small an ROI is though, it is still an ROI.
As
a result, it becomes an investment and not a donation.
Is what the Gates
Foundation doing ultimately better for Society then if they did nothing? Time
will tell.
However, the fact that some kind of ROI is being aimed for -
even if it is not achieved - automatically removes the term "philanthropy" in my
humble opinion. The fact that the Gates Foundation wants to present investment
as philanthropic is - to myself - quite telling.

In that it costs nearly nothing to do, and makes the poor person more likely to
allow their government/friends to use it, too, thereby reducing the open source
market! (And don't forget, some few of those poor become a little richer one
day)[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
