Eh. Too cynical. The projects I've seen are actually
geared towards helping large numbers of people at a low
cost. They are not investment opportunities - and some of
them might have a real impact.
(Of course, sacrificing 10B out of a xxB fortune and getting
some respect out of it isn't exactly painful...even better
if it gives your wife something to do. There's not really
much else you can do with excess money. I suspect that he's
making good use of his fortune - probably more effectively
than most other philanthropists.)
Gates never struck me as pure evil - selfish, yes, win at
most costs, yes, really lousy OS, yes (10 thousand times*),
but not pure evil. Ellison, on the other hand, would spend
that cash on an island. I'm kind of hoping that M$ blows
Oracle out of the water at some point.

*From talking to some people, my suspicion is that much of
Windows can be explained by the hypothesis that M$ really
never figured out how to program or manage projects
