I believe Oracle would have to live in a slightly warped reality in order to
pursue this further but slightly warped realities abound nowadays, especially
when a lot of money is involved.
Fundamentally, I think some people at
Oracle feel they are morally right. Historically, such feelings have been used
as the excuse for many immoral and atrocious actions. Secondly, Oracle may
feel that the "fix is in" at on or more higher courts. Of course I'm not
suggesting that the courts were directly paid off by Oracle. What I mean is
that Oracle may feel that the radical pro-corporate stance of some of the higher
courts make act in their favor.
Third, the amount Oracle is paying in
court costs is still trivial when compared to the billion dollar payday they are
looking for. In addition, if their shakedown of Google succeeds then that would
open the door for them to go after a whole bunch of less funded entities who are
using Java. Getting billions from Google could be just the tip of the
iceberg.

contexts
than the one we’re in now — the one that we think is reality.
