Actually, the current policy is not oppression/repression
alone; it is combined with increased doses of soporific
"panem et circenses", so We The People will remain
apathetic.
The "free" press acts as a reinforcer, since it does not
flag any abuse as such and remains firmly committed to not
taking the side of the facts.
Yes, upheaval is an option when the people's basic needs
begin to erode. Or at least those of large segment of the
people; we're not there yet. We have a good prison system
that nobody takes exception to, and police forces training
on peaceful student sit-ins has not been cancelled; just so
anyone who would be willing to be more assertive has been
warned.
The spirit of the First Amendment shall not be tolerated.
The other option is "we the people" here becoming
insignificant, when another part of the world realizes that
the previously-dominant and previously-dynamic superpower is
asleep.
Then the focus of civilization shifts, like it did away from
Rome when politicos became too powerful. Or from the
Islamic countries when self-appointed clerics destroyed the
scientific culture.
Wait and see. There are candidates who are willing to
assume leadership as we continue to slumber in navel-gazing.
