Australia Parliament Committee
Rejects ACTA
The Australian Parliament’s Joint Standing
Committee on Treaties issued a report today recommending that “the
Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement not be ratified by Australia” unless and
until the government can provide an adequate evidentiary record proving that the
agreement will be in Australia’s best interests.
The decision follows close
on the heels of a similar rejection by the EU parliament’s INTA committee, also
the primary trade law committee in that body. As the report itself notes, the
move by the Australian committee to reject ACTA makes it increasingly unlikely
that ACTA will go into force in any member country. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

A poll commissioned by
National Geographic says 65% of Americans believe that Obama would be a better
Chief Executive IF we were faced with an invasion of Aliens from Outer Space.
Most of the regulars have talked about Heinlein, Van Vogt -- and I believe
there have been a few comments about Haldeman and Pournelle who have all dealt
with the subject.

Like CISPA, Secure IT would remove legal barriers that prevent
companies from sharing information about cyber threats with one another and with
the government.
The new version of the legislation, S. 3342, aims to address
the concerns of privacy advocates, who had warned that the old bill would give
spy agencies access to Americans' private online information.

The New York Times (at
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2012/06/28/us/supreme-court-liberal-wing-5-4-
decisions.html although it may not stay around for very long) has an interesting
analysis of the current Court's split decisions. The Times looked at 5-4
decisions since Roberts joined the court in 2005. Specifically it looked at 5-4
decisions in which the four liberal judges (Breyer, Ginsburg, Kagan or Stevens,
and Sotomayor or Souter) voted together and were in the majority. That
constitutes 30 of the 100 5-4 decisions during that period.
This is the FIRST time that Chief Justice Roberts has been the fifth vote along
with the four most liberal justices. Kennedy has the lion's share, or 25 of
these 30 decisions. Justices Thomas and Scalia account for two decisions each
and Justice Alito has never been the fifth vote accompanying the four liberals.
Just interesting data. It's surprising that Roberts would choose this case for
ending up in an alignment he has never been in.

On June 7, one of the project’s main developers, Nick Daly, posted a
seemingly contradictory message in the official mailing list announcing
something that’s been long-awaited: a beta release.
But at the same time,
Daly, who just came back from Rio de Janeiro’s Human Rights and Technology
Conference, lamented the talk of vaporware he heard from many people there.
Noting that it’s been a year and a half since the FreedomBox Foundation was
launched, he issued a call to arms:
“We really should have more development
work to show for it,” he wrote. “Join us and ask anyone you know to take part in
the project.”
In an e-mail, Daly told Threat Level that setting the end of
the year as the goal for the initial beta-release is intentionally
ambitious.
