I was once one of those 'young people without insurance who needed health care'

going back to the example I gave in my original post

the bill from the lab was $1250. If I had no insurance I would have had to pay
that amount (plus interest/penalties etc)

However, the mere fact that I had Insurance knocked 90% off the bill and the lab
only got paid $124, of that I had to pay 10% of it or $12.

so the range of $50,000 (medicade) to $600,000 (no coverage, unable to pay cash)
is in the right ballpark.

On my statements, I routinely see 'discounts' of over 75% between the amount
'billed' and the amount that actually gets paid.

I was in this spring for a minor surgical procedure requiring an overnight stay
at the private hospital the surgeon was affiliated with. I paid a $200 deposit
on admission.

When the statement came, the initial billing from the hospital (not the doctors
involved) was $18,500. Then the "negotiated rate" from the insurance
company was listed immediately below it at $1950, which was picked up 80% by the
insurance, and after adding in the costs for IVs, etc, I was out another $250
total to the hospital. This for roughly 24 hours in a standby ward and a
30-minute OR procedure to clean up an abcess.
