One overweight chap i know went to Stockholm for work. Public transport was
fantastic in that city and as a result many don't have cars. He lost lots of
weight by being forced to walk to the public transport pick up
points(bus/train). On his return to Australia (and to his car), he quickly piled
on the weight (and more).
And i've heard that public transport was decimated by the auto industry in the
USA. As vehicles became cheaper over time, it was much easier for people to walk
from the couch to the car in their garage (yes house designs even changed to
include a garage under the house roof line) and drive to their local shops
rather than to walk to the bus or shop itself.
So i'd like to see a simple graph of obesity levels over time cross correlated
against the demise of public transport. I suspect such a graph would be an eye
opener.
But due to the huge tax take coming from motor industry products and the
associated products those products use, i expect the governments to have no
interest in identifying such a connection.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
