I have to disagree with you on one point.
The studios make their money off the artists with all those little extras that
suddenly become more than 60% of the gross revenue.
Promotion, PR, Vacations to Monte Carlo, Call girls and a host of other
'essentials' can easily make the amount of money due to the artists.
A cousin of mine was ripped of by Decca in the 1960's. He got somethere between
5 and 10% of the royalties due to him. He got out and signed up with another
label. They only took 70%. He felt that he was doing rather well. In hindsight,
it was really very poor.
Sadly,an excees of drugs in the 1970's put an end to a promising career.
On the plus side, he did get me into the backstage area at a lot of memorable
gigs in the late 60's though. For that I'm eternally thankful.
Back to the present day, if you win say, 'America's got talent' and get a
recording contract worth $1M you'd be lucky to see $50K before tax. The PR and
everything else would make sure you don't see much of the value of the contract
at all.
Nowt's changes has it?
