I still have a big gripe with the whole thing not going far enough even if MS
had complied. Unless I'm misunderstanding, the choice window only affected
default browser choice. IE is not deinstalled and removed from the computer if
a user chooses, say, Firefox. That's a problem. A lot of people choose !EI
simply for security reasons, but having it present is still a security risk.
Integrating a browser into the operating system guarantees insecurity, even if
the user is defaulting to a different browser. As some pointed out when the EU
was discussing the choice window, IE is still there and handling some processes
because of the nature of Windows' architecture.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

I have also recently installed a fresh Windows 7 system for someone who doesn't
quite feel ready to dump Windows completely (even though they do dual-boot with
a Linux system).
I, too, was surprised that the browser ballot screen didn't
appear. I installed Firefox anyway—these people wouldn't be happy if I
told them that they had to use Internet Explorer from now on. Since I don't
really care about the browser ballot screen anyway, it didn't even occur to me
to complain—though, come to think of it, perhaps I should have considered
doing so. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

I bought a new ThinkPad back in October. It came with Windows 7, but I don't
recall getting that choice. However, that didn't stop me from adding Linux as
well as Firefox, Seamonkey, OpenOffice, etc.
