The financial billion is defined - world wide ! - as 10^9. In French I believe
it's known as a milliard, which makes more sense to me, but never mind ...
There's a bunch of other agreements like that as well, like - as a chemist - the
*correct* spelling on *both* sides of the pond is "sulfur" and
"aluminium". That doesn't, however, stop me spelling it sulphur and
Americans spelling it aluminum, though ... :-)
