The long scale [also] makes more sense to me, as its based on the million raised
to the prefix-power:
billion = bi-million = million^2 = 10^12
trillion = tri-million = million^3 = 10^18
quadrillion = quad-million = million^4 = 10^24
etc
[and was what I was taught at school, pre 1975.]
The short scale is silly as it is based on a thousand raised to the power-prefix
plus one, eg trillion = tri-million = thousand^(3+1) = thousand^4 = 10^12
Simple solution is to rename the short scale (as per its base for the powers):
thousand = thousand^1 = 10^3
bisand = bi-thousand = thousand^2 = 10^6
trisand = tri-thousand = thousand^3 = 10^9
quadsand = quad-thousand = thousand^4 = 10^12
