There is no official language in the US. There are however more different
languages actually spoken in the US by significant numbers of people than in
Switzerland. For example the number of Spanish speaking Americans is 4 times
the total population of Switzerland. I'm not sure though that langauge is the
primary issue.
There are significant communities of Mexican, Arab, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc.
Americans with more than different languages. Many of these communities retain
a lot of their native culture. I think there are much greater cultural
differences between the Chinese Americans in Chinatown and the Arab communities
in Michigan for example than between German and French speakers in Switzerland.
Not to mention African Americans, French Creole, Native Americans, etc.
