According to the BBC:

The rover, tucked inside a protective shell, is due to begin its descent to the surface at 05:24 GMT, Monday (06:24 BST; 22:24 PDT, Sun).

A signal confirming it has landed inside a deep depression known as Gale Crater is expected on Earth about seven minutes later, at 05:31 GMT.

Day 3: Witness revoked statement and Apple copied Samsung
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, August 06 2012 @ 07:22 AM EDT
"During Samsung's cross-examination, Forstall said he didn't remember
seeing a Samsung phone with a click-wheel control - the SGH-E910 - during the
iPhone's design process. "

"In response to the breakdown, Forstall admitted Apple has done "tear
downs" of competitors phones, including the Samsung's and the Galaxy S.

Forstall ended his time on the stand by saying he never instructed anyone to
copy Samsung's designs because the company wanted to create something that no
one had ever built. "

The dangers of 'the cloud'
Authored by: complex_number on Monday, August 06 2012 @ 11:06 AM EDT
clicky
[www.smh.com.au]

I'm firmly behing 'Woz' on this one.

All it needs it for the 'Feds' to raid a cloud supplier on some trumped up warrant and poof, all that data of yours is gone before your very eyes.

There is no way that the Feds will look at the different datasets and say, sorry guys leave them alone. They'll take the lot. Every last byte. Then you'll have to go through endless legal nightmares to prove that the data is yours and then more to prove to them that 'it really does not contain any items of interest you them.' That last point is going to be really hard to prove without forensic examination of the data. This all costs time and lots of money. in the meantime, your business had gone out of business, the mortgage company has foreclosed and you are homeless.

Yes I know this is the nightmare scenario but... If you think this won't happen then you are very much kidding yourself.

Think about what happens when your cloud supplier goes bust. Who owns all that lovely data then. your sure don't. They are assets of the business and will be sold off to the highest bidder.

Encrypting everything will only IMHO draw attention to the fact that you have something to hide.

Now for the naysayers repostes....

Apple: Samsung even lifted our icons (pictures)
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, August 06 2012 @ 03:28 PM EDT
I suppose Samsung will not be able to show evidence of Apple's icons being
coppies. Example -- Apple's settings icon is just like the openPhone icon
contributed in Nov,2007 by Walrick - and under the GNU General Public License,
The Sunflower photo icon looks like the sunflower in Adobe Elements 6

Well there you go, Samsung asked for trouble. I have Another Brand
phone where the icon has a green handset rotated clockwise 90 degrees
on a white background. Not hard to do, not copied, still functional.

Google records show book scanning was aimed at Amazon
Authored by: Gringo_ on Tuesday, August 07 2012 @ 08:30 AM EDT

The supposedly " damning evidence"...

In a 2003 internal Google presentation described in the filing, the company stated “[we want web searchers interested in book content to come to Google not Amazon.”

As annotated by the Authors’ Guild, the 2003 Google presentation also said “[e]verything else is secondary … but make money.” (The presentation was filed under seal so the context of the remark is unclear).

The Authors Guild says this shows that the scanning was an overtly commercial project, and that scanning was not a fair use as Google is claiming. What a narrow vision of the world they have. They don't consider the possibility that one can make a positive contribution to the world while at the same time scratching their own itch? Liberating books from Amazon's domination is a worthy cause. If somebody doing research through Google's scanned books should happen to click on a Google ad, then that is their choice. Let them contribute a tenth of a cent to help Google defray the cost of the scanning effort if they feel so inclined. It is nobody's business but theirs.
