Yes, the first images are from the 1Mpix Hazard Avoidance
cameras, *before* their dust covers are ejected.
The rover includes 13 cameras, including a powerful
telescope and a full-color stereo pair. JPL knew imagery
would be their best PR as the mission progresses, they did
not skimp on the pretty pictures.
But the prettiest pictures will have to wait until enough of
the rover is checked out to deploy the mast.

Maybe they'll find some rectangles with rounded corners. ;-)
BTW, I recorded coverage from NASA TV overnight. Today's a holiday here, so
I'll have time to watch it.

It's amazing these days what can be done with gimp or photoshop. Too bad that
they make photos less reliable as evidence. The Enquirer regularly has photos
of martians on their cover and they didn't spend nearly as much as NASA to get
