Scripps Local News does a Takedown on NASA
Authored by: red floyd on Monday, August 06 2012 @ 02:51 PM EDT
Scripps DMCA'ed NASA's YouTube channel because of NASA generated content -- the video of the Curiosity landing.

CDE has been relicensed as LGPL, with OpenMotif to follow in a few months...

Common Desktop Environment site

Slashdot article

Yes, it's been a long time. Yes, I hope to try it out...I did a little with OpenCDE, because I wanted to see how it worked, and I enjoyed it.

Treo phone icon
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, August 07 2012 @ 04:40 AM EDT
The Handspring/Palm Treo used a white handset (with almost
the same angle) on a green background several years before
the iPhone came out. I guess they stole an Apple future
"innovation." None of the other icons shown on Slash Gear
even come close to matching. And this is supposed to be the
strength of Apple's patent case? What a joke.

Did Apple try to kill an old lady?
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, August 07 2012 @ 05:45 AM EDT
Did Apple try to kill an old lady? At first it may seem unlikely, but, who
knows? Apple has targeted a lot lately.

She is not the kind of customer Apple wants, according to some: "Apple
wants to be cool and modern and have the type of architecture that would appeal
to the tech crowd"

But, killing her with a blunt blow on the nose would appear a bit harsh, I
gather.

US House to ITU: Hands Off the Internet
Authored by: JamesK on Tuesday, August 07 2012 @ 10:30 AM EDT
The U.S. House of Representatives voted late Thursday to send a message to the United Nations' International Telecommunication Union that the Internet doesn't need new international regulations. The vote was unanimous: 414-0.

Now, if only the U.S. would keep hands off the legitimate Internet use in other countries. Just because a web site has a .com URL, it should not fall under U.S. jurisdiction. Nor should legal gambling sites in other countries be interfered with by the U.S. government. Perhaps, the U.S. would like it if other countries, such as Iran or China tried forcing their policies on U.S. sites.

Off Topic thread
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, August 07 2012 @ 10:25 PM EDT
Here's a simple solution for Samsung:

Samsung's phones should be packaged in a plain black box (exactly like iPhone's
box, but black instead of white), with the only thing on the front being
"NOT an iPhone" in vibrant red colour.

Samsung should make their campaign around that slogan. Repeat it over and over
and over. Then no one could accuse them of causing confusion (well, knowing the
legal system they still would).

Also, where's consumer protection in all this? Having similar interfaces is
*beneficial to the consumer* as I can switch from iPhone to Android and expect
things to work more or less the same. It's also a benefit to me that I know
which icon to press to dial the phone. I want them to be the same. Does the
court not care about this stuff?
