"Shop" has also had the street connotation of "something altered
from the original" for a long time.
In automotive circles, something coming out of a "chop shop" would be
said to have been "shopped"... and that usage has been around for -
well, I don't know. Longer than I have, and I'm a grandpa.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Which claims to have EVERY word in the English Language. (They define that as
"any word that can be found in print at least five times").
They recently published a list of words that they felt didn't merit inclusion or
they were wondering whether to include. They got BADLY embarrassed, QUICKLY.
Many of these were "terms of art" and people who recognised the words
could find examples in the hundreds, in hours.
So if even the Complete dictionary can't get it right, how can you claim that
"'shop" is not a word?
Cheers,
