That is, space designers tend to be conservative, and use parts that have known
good reliability. That takes time to establish. Thus it was that the space
shuttle flew with magnetic core memory.
There is also the problem of pixel size and cosmic rays. Curiosity has received
a significant dose of ionizing radiation. Larger pixels work better in this
respect.
Larger pixels also work better in respect of long-term reliability -- more atoms
have to move before the device fails, and the smaller the device geometry, (and
the more pixels) the shorter the life time.
Finally, moving all those bits around costs energy, which may be at a premium on
curiosity.

I have seen a story about some previous NASA project that explained that while
the megapixels are low so they can be transmitted easily the camera used a super
fine lens. Probably the same for the current project?
