GSM devices don't talk to a carrier *until* the SIM is installed. It's pretty
amazing how fast the time and date drift when there's no carrier network to talk

Which implies those phones you unpacked have been booted
by the carrier, had his rom loaded, and his sim installed.
Who knows what state the phones were in that either Apple or
Samsung allegedly photographed. I prefer where possible to purchase
a factory state, unlocked handset. It comes with no sim, and the battery
still in a plastic bag. The clock epoch zero will vary with maker.
After setup the time may, or not, adjust automatically from
the local carrier's system clock, or by locale estimate from gps.
