Um. Just because I mentioned "protective sleeve" you assume I meant
Rubber?
And I do know what I speak of: My wifes iPhone, my Galaxy S2 and my
Galaxy tab 10.1 all have protective cases which make the phones look very
similar, and not at all like the designer intended them to look.
How can anyone argue about finer points of design when these devices for
the most part go through life in disguise?

Who said anything about rubber, or antenna?
Protective cases are sold to protect, and there is a flourishing
aftermarket in them. Not even aftermarket if the device vendor
clinches the sale by including one. They greatly reduce the
likelihood of breakage if the device is dropped, and provide
some protection against spilled liquids. And disguise the
device so it is indistinguishable from a competitors.
But as darrellb points out below, that is irrelevant, the instant
