As soon as the move was on to electric typewriters, as you observed on the
Selectric, there was no longer a need for the long keystroke to swing the arm up
to the paper - so the next most important consideration was to keep crap &
rabbits & Pez out of the workings of the keyboard. Square keys fit together
in rows, providing a good fill for blocking foreign matter entry. Add in the
need to have key separation for differentiation by touch, and you get a taper.
Add the material molding requirement, and you get a rounded edge taper. Add fit
to finger, and... well, the entire design of a computer-keyboard key is pretty
much mandated by its function.
Making a touchscreen image of the key you're used to doesn't sound very original

Anon seems to know everything! Anyway, here is the prior art for a rectangular phone with rounded corners and round
buttons that he posted a couple of days ago.
