I'd like to see some prior art before 1984. Round cornered
rectangles came as part of the vector drawing tools in the
Macintosh Toolbox rom. Not saying Steve invented them,
but I think he stole them from some earlier place than
you quoted.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

It's very difficult to manufacture a device with perfectly square corners.
There will be at least some radius of curvature.
So this boils down to what is the radius of the corners? 1mm? 1cm? 3cm?
The whole thing is pretty stupid.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Stories about a patent for rounded corners amazed me, since that functionality
has been around for eons. Then I read that the case is for trade dress, not a
functional patent.
As I understand it, Apple accuses Samsung of making devices that look too much
like Apple devices for no reason other than to look like Apple devices and thus
confuse consumers into thinking they are equivalent.
Its not about rounded corners that don't snag or rounded bottom edge that makes
it easy to pick up. Its about the combination of multiple factors that creates a
distinctive look.
Personally, I think those two factors are functional enough that all
manufacturers should use them. However, there are degrees of 'rounded' and other
factors involved. I don't know enough about trade dress or this case to judge
overall.
