So obvious....

"That is the whole point of the patent system; to promote
and reward innovation."

I just wonder - when did "design patents" come about, and
why are they accorded the legal status of inventions, which
is what patents supposedly cover? I can see the merit behind
preventing outright counterfeiting, but how does society
benefit from prohibiting competing products that are clearly
labeled but just look similar? The Samsung and Apple
tablets are no more alike than a Dell and HP laptop, or a
Sony and LG television. Our economy has competing products
in every category imaginable, some of which closely resemble
each other.

Apple is exhibiting a sickening tendency to try to get
patents on everything they do, even if the idea is obvious,
or wasn't their idea to begin with (e.g. slide-to-unlock,
also look at Fidler's tablet prototype for something that
looks almost exactly like an iPad).

Yep, all the designs are basically a
rectangle with rounded corners.

Looks like touch screen technology
has improved.

If Apple wants to put a claim on simplicity
I think there might be some objections from
Japan.
