Mutually assured destruction, as a deterrent theory, assumes
rational behavior amongst its participants, in the sense that self preservation
will be the paramount consideration for all. It is a giant game of chicken, with
that at its core. Withal, it means brinksmanship is the order of the day, but
that no one will overplay their hand.
But Apple did so. It assumed that no one had all of the weapons, nor the
warchest, nor the will, to call them to account and retaliate.
They were wrong. Now they are in a feedback loop in which all they can do is
escalate ... or concede.
Perhaps the self-sainted Jobs knew whereof he spoke when he said he would go
thermonuclear, implying universal destruction was OK by him :-(
Now there will be blood ... and enormous collateral damage.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

MAD was the most successful peace strategy in history. (Or atomic weapons.
Take your pick, as they quickly became the same.)
The strategy may depend on having a small number of highly invested parties.
Having hundreds of minor parties able to "press the button", or trick
others into doing so, may not have worked so well.
