Maybe because there are add-ons out there
that have the needed RSS features, it makes sense
to reduce the maintenance load on the core software.
I don't use RSS, so I may not be aware of some
feature that you really like, but I would guess
you could hack some of the existing add-ons to
do what you want.

Mozilla have company on this one. Mind you it's not the first time.
One
workaround was select Mail as the default RSS reader.
Apple thought they'd
fixed it July 2011 but I guess
they've
flagged it away .

Thunderbird or SeaMonkey do RSS feeds - treating them more like email.
Large cost in switching though.
