"Naah, it goes right alongside an omnipotent and benevolent god of peace
and love allowing war to exist."
In some periods in the glorious history of religion you could get burned at the
stake for for even asking.
It is one thing to blame some evil creature for all that is wrong with creation.
It is another to accuse the creator itself of lies and deception.
However, that was exactly what the Gnostics did, blame the creator for all the
evil, lies, and deception (I simplify a lot).

Some say the sun rises in the east, some say it rises in the west; the truth
lies probably somewhere in between.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Jesus answered this question in his parable of the sower - If you were to tear
out the weeds, you risk tearing out the good grain as well. It is better to
wait to tear out everything and sort out the good grain at harvest time. The
idea is that if God were to remove the evil from our lives, he would also affect
the good things in our lives too. It is not that God cannot deal with the evil,
it is that God knows better than to remove it.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

There are more possibilities than that.
