But for open source you have the additional illiusion? that other people are
checking the source as well.
How much time would it take for an average linux user to check every bit of
source one-self and also don't overlook a problem ?
And there is the theoretical problem of trust in the compiler (inserted code).
Best to have your computer off-line, off-radio, off-powergrid if you need total
security.
(or just leave it switched off ;-) )

Although I may have trusted Canonical to build and
distribute Linux, and even suffered through the Ubuntu
desktop changes in good faith, to afterwards discover I'm
now running a point of sale system for Amazon is... new
information.
The old information (that I trusted Canonical) doesn't
really shed much light on the new information, so
Shuttleworth's point is weak, however fact based.
