Are there any pragmatic leaders left? Does one have to be a jerk in

That's a pragmatic leader. Ellisonians wouldn't make good gamblers, either.
We're way beyond ethics here. A pragmatic leader does what's good for the
company (to save money or make money), avoids illegality (it's a crap shoot*),
and tries to keep customers happy.
Not sure Gates fits this profile, after all, he's letting SB run MS.
Could Linus become a billionaire with devouring his morals? It's certainly
possible.
