Micro USB is not without problems

Both the old 'dock' connector, and the new 'Lightning' connector allow more
functionality than a USB connector.

Even at the basic level of charging, the cables are capable of transmitting more
power *safely* over the pins than USB micro is. There's a few Android tablets
out there whose chargers push 1.8A over a USB micro connection, despite the fact
that the connector is only rated up to 1.1A. Mind you, it *should* still work
*most* of the time due to safety margins, but it will eventually cause problems
(like a fire) for someone whose cable or connectors are in spec, but don't have
quite that same safety margin built in.

(That 1.1A rating is why most USB chargers anymore output 1.0A. They
intentionally output *less* than the maximum amperage because providing too much
can cause the wires to overheat and start fires.)
