Yes, jury nullification can be abused, but it still has a function.
They are all dead now, so we can't ask. But I assume the escaped slaves were
glad the people that helped them stay free were aquitted because of
nullifications. And it served it's purpose in prohibition.
Aquitting white murderers of whatever the PC term is now for black people in the
southern states had nothing to do with nullification per se, it was the result
of having no jury of the accues peers. Otherwise it would probably just have
resulted in a hung jury.
But the letter of the law can not be the excuse for injustice. (Patiently
waiting for someone to apply Godwins)
But the bigger of the two issues I mentioned is finding a jury of peers.
Currently the system is set up to favor juries biased against the accused. A
