Might be worth looking into whether that phrase is defined
in the patent. Might not require use of the Internet.
I think an NFS mount would have to be on the same network,
but maybe somebody has done something NFS-like on an
"internet", in which case "ls somedir" would count as prior
art, if somedir contains both a network-mounted directory
and a local directory.
Got to imagine some version of WAIS or Archie or some such
thing did local caching. (Come to think of it, so do all
modern browsers.) Does that count or does the claim require
that *both* the local and "internet" searches must be
performed and return results?

Dow Jones News Retrieval Service did this. I had a subscription in the late
