There's a book for sale in a local bookstore here on how
to build your own
computer from components and peripherals,
and how to install and authenticate
Windows Vista on it.
It's only one copy and nobody seems to be buying
it.
Sometimes I go back to see that it's still there and to
wonder about its
incongruous choice of the operating system.
The freedom to tinker with the
operating system would have
been such a natural part of the exercise. But no.
Free
operating systems are not even mentioned, as far as I can
see. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Back when I bought my first (IMSAI 8080), the only way to get a computer was to
build it, often from scratch. My IMSAI came as a bare board, a bunch of parts
and the documentation. There were no instructions. Back then, building
included lots of soldering. Then you had to write your own software, as there
was very little available to buy.
Ahhh!!! The good old days. ;-)
