Isn't a lawyer bound by client confidentiality?
Would it be a breach for one lawyer to say to another "I know this guy.
He..." without it being part of a procedure?

Once Hogan began to talk, Samsung's lawyers may have been suspicious as to
whether he had a grudge against them. In that case, they may have done a bit of
background checking. A routine thing for them to look for would be bankruptcy
and other court records.
The law firm could have done their own checking, or they could have outsourced
that to someone who specializes in background checks (e.g. a private detective
firm). I imagine that no more than a few hours of work went into this, without
anyone having to leave their desk.
