> OMG it's awful
Exactly my sentiment Sir.
I regret to inform you I have a daughter
shortly interviewing for a Google post,
she desperately wants to work in such a cool office.

I can't help thinking that it looks to be a big fire hazard.

I have to agree. It's like a cross between a Turkish brothel, a cheap Indian
restaurant, 70's retro and a padded cell .... what were they thinking !
I do like the rooftop terrace though.

There's quirky and fun, and then there's tasteless design gone mad. Maybe it all
looks fine in context, but probably not.
Then I see the endless soulless repetition on the rooftop terrace, and I see a
cafeteria that would not look out of place in any big office.
My personal hate is design that parrots function without being functional, so
those wheel-brace doors really get my goat. If they are not functional, (a label
reads "Do Not Turn To Open"), they are pathetic (IMNSHO).
And if you are going to put an ejector seat in the middle of the hall, at least
put a big lever next to it labeled "Do not Pull". Otherwise what you
have is a museum exhibit.
This is very much not what I see in the original Google Office. This is a
company that has grown out of touch trying to parrot what it used to do when it
understood.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

What Google is trying to do is make their employees
comfortable, feel at home, make them want to stay at work or
if they must stay longer, then make them comfortable.
If you have ever worked in a startup environment, where you
have people staying overnight at the office then you just
get it what Google are doing here. Some of these
furnishings shown in the fotos (Snug-lushness..) clearly
would let people sleep at the office if they have to. I
personally have seen this happen often where even Senior
officers, slept in the office after a long night, or if they
were arriving at the office after a long airplane flight
from abroad sometimes on some sofa, or even on the carpet
floor.
I like "Grannys Flat" many places I have stayed in England
(Tinley Hall) look like that inside, and its just nice, it
has old English flair to it.
The Lala Library is georgous and certainly very en-vogue
from a designer point of view, while the white lounge area
may be a bit impractical for keeping it clean though.
Market Square is cool, this is like many Cafeteria's, the
important part is probably the quality of the food.
'Padded Cell' meeting room... is just hilarius. Again,
creativity...
...a Hobbit Hole seating area.. looks a bit like a ... swing
club? Its just fun.
The Roof-Garden is a beautiful Idea.
Dont like the "Town Hall" very cold industrial design.
The Ejector seat is kind of funny, interesting, but actually
rather out of place.
Overall its very cool what Google is doing, and inspiring
and much better than most offices I have seen where workers
are like cattle in their anonymous cubicles or worse. Like
large area office workspaces without anykind of privacy or
retreating space, those are really horrible and humanly
degrading.

I think I see where they went wrong:
PENSON founder Lee Penson says:
"It's all about human beings and that's it. Think sunken snugs, comfort, fun,
comfy slippers, squishy carpets, cushions, daybeds, nice fresh food, gardening,
vegetables, health, visual stimulation, relaxation, exercise, fresh air and
you'll get what it's all about as a HQ."
So that's no
concentration, synergy, information-rich environment, or even work. I know
that's a four letter word.
You can sit in the library, but you have to climb
over furniture or walk right around the room to read a book. You don't have to
look at the books of course; there's curtains to hide them. And they are "arty
and inspirational" books, not actually useful books.
I don't want a bank of
vending machines, whether it is called a micro-kitchen or anything else. I want
a sweet shop with a grey-haired old lady in it, or a model train that goes round
the whole office and delivers mail and stuff that I order online (wherever I
happen to be), or maybe a friendly office robot. I don't want a long line of
identical green booths on a roof with nowhere to put my laptop; I want two dozen
individually unique niches in an organic fractal. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Their "Market Square" looks like the mess deck on a Navy
ship. At least they didn't paint it gray.
Reminds me of an airport - Atlanta? - I changed planes in
once. Looked around and said, "Wow, they decorated this
place in Early Cell Block".
