Hebrew University of Jerusalem sued the automaker in 2010, arguing
Einstein's will gave the school all rights to the use of his image. This week,
however, a Los Angeles court said those rights expired 55 years after the
scientist's death.
"Now, nearly 60 years after his death, that persona
should be freely available to those who seek to appropriate it as part of their
own expression, even in tasteless ads," ruled US District Judge Howard
Matz.

Cory Doctorow has just posted an interesting blog
about Amazon wiping a
Norwegian's Kindle and
permanently closed her account. What's more,
Amazon refuses to give any reason other than she
has violated their
terms.
He thinks it might be because she ordered an ebook
whilst in
England.
Kindle user claims Amazon deleted whole library without explanation

Just an conclusion I came to this weekend.
Dark ages (Middle ages)
Age Of Enlightenment
Industrial Age
Information Age
Age of Fog (Now!)
Too much information of dubious value and availability. Faked science, patent
and copyright restrictions, Wikipedia, rewritten history, etc. The world now
knows more then ever before in history but we have no idea what is real.
You can quote me if you like. :)[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

The display panel manufacturer plans to completely cut its
years-long business ties with Apple as it believes its American partner is no
longer a cash-generator due to the iPhone maker’s stiffer supply-chain
management structure.
The Cupertino, California-based firm has been lowering
its reliance on Samsung-manufactured displays for use in its popular i-branded
devices as it is leveraging its influence to source components from Samsung’s
rivals attracted by better pricing.
“We are unable to supply our
flat-screens to Apple with huge price discounts. Samsung has already cut our
portion of shipments to Apple and next year we will stop shipping displays,”
said a senior Samsung source.

From L'Aquila quake:
Italy scientists guilty of manslaughter (BBC)
Six Italian
scientists and an ex-government official have been sentenced to six years in
prison over the 2009 deadly earthquake in L'Aquila.
A regional court found
them guilty of multiple manslaughter.
[...]
The seven - all members of
the National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention of Major Risks - were
accused of having provided "inexact, incomplete and contradictory" information
about the danger of the tremors felt ahead of 6 April 2009 quake, Italian media
report.
I thought that "inexact, incomplete and contradictory"
information was the state of the art in seismology.

Having the strongest and largest search engine as a US company has many benefits
to the US and the US government.
If Google is weakened then non US search engines may grow to fill the gap.
There is very little barrier to this other than Google's current success. As a
result the US may lose leadership in search engine tech.
Is this what the US government really wants? [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

You didn't have to be psychic to see this one coming. Samsung has decided to
Cancel it's Contract(s) to Supply Apple with touch
screens.
Suing your customers is bad, suing your sole supplier for using
their own products in their own products is idiotic beyond measure. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

"someone must have invented the DVR .. And if TiVo genuinely does own those
patents .. then the largest makers of DVRs in the world – notably Motorola,
Cisco, Pace and Technicolor, not to mention Huawei – Samsung, Humax and NDS and
perhaps a few others, could all be in the firing line"

Ever since its acquisition by Unilever, the quirky ice cream company
has been the poster case for a campaign to create a new kind of company that’s
friendlier to social enterprise: the B Corporation. Now Ben and Jerry’s is one,
too.

Plus, maybe we’ll see a new flavor out of this.
“While
there haven’t been any official discussions,” Greenwood said, “we never turn
down a good flavor brainstorm. How about B Hive, a honey-flavored concoction or
B Gorp with Fair Trade nuts and dried fruit?”

BBC
Report
Microsoft has reported a 22% fall in quarterly
profits, after deferring some revenue ahead of the upcoming releases of its
Windows 8 operating system and its latest version of Office.
Microsoft
deferred a total of $1.36bn of revenue, which it will regain in the
following quarter.
Sorry - I haven't found a link to the followup
article:
Microsoft reports a 10%, half billion dollar rise in
quarterly profits following the outrageously successful launch of Windows 8 and
the Windows RT Surface.

I know it's not bleeding edge as it is even a bit behind the AMD curve. It is
the Windows machine that runs my CNC PCB router and the Pico-scope, amongst
other things.
I wanted to install a database of electronic components because it refused to
install in Wine (it muttered Mono and then stopped). It took an age to install,
and then I had three months of Windows 7 upgrades together with the usual AVG
upgrade and the Adobe products. With all the shutting down and starting up and
'Windows is configuring your system' and 'Do you want to boot Windows 7
(Recovered)' and an antivirus scan, it took five hours to get it settled.
It runs like a constipated slug. My beloved Opera seems to have both hands tied
behind its back. Much of the time, Windows 7 seems too busy to spend any time
doing what I ask it to do. I dread a visit to the Start menu. I configure the
system tray and it does exactly what it wants to do.
While I was there, I booted up Kubuntu to do an update including Adobe Flash. It
took 35 minutes and I think the download size was about the same as Windows 7.
Kubuntu 12.04 boots in no time, runs like and athlete, is friends with its
programs and closes like lightning. Windows 7 takes several minutes just to
close down, even when it is not apparently installing updates.
Just to let you know, you all made the right choice of operating system, no
matter what it was.
