"Nokia’s strategic options are shrinking rapidly. It’s my view that when
Microsoft enters the phone business with its own devices Nokia will have run out
of time as an independent company. The most likely final chapter in its storied
history sees Microsoft buying up Nokia’s sizable patent portfolio, its in-house
design and engineering expertise and — perhaps — the brand rights. Perhaps
Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop will even rejoin the Microsoft leadership team to run
the phone business. Alternatives to this outcome seem to be very few and far
between.
Truly a sad end to a once dominant company." Link [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Not so much for the Dead Fish, but looking at the bottom end
of the market "Others" shipped 74 million handsets, nearly
as many as Apple and Samsung combined, and this by companies
who each managed less than 4% share. Talk about a long tail.
41% of smartphones shipped by vendors each <4% of market
means there must be more than 10 of them. A bonus point for
every one more than five you can name, and RIM, ZTE, HTC
are already counted in the big players.
