Not sure that it's just the money. I think I remember reading about an
interview with Valve's CEO, where he voiced his objection to the amount of
control demanded by Microsoft over anything that goes into their Windows 8
store.
(As an aside, trying to be helpful: it's lose, losing, loser, etc.)

>If Valve manages to make the big studios start releasing their games for
Linux
Are they likely to do that though ?
Valve's goal is to get the entire Steam library running on Linux. Porting them
all over is going to be a massively expensive undertaking, even if Valve did
have permission to alter the code.
Building Wine, or some equivalent, into Steam to run Windows games in Linux is a
much simpler task. But it also means that Windows game developers won't be
encouraged to produce a Linux port. All they'll do is make sure their windows
version works though Steam's Wine equivalent.
Windows has plenty of games on it that are minimum effort ports from consoles,
often to the detriment of the players*. So I see no reason to expect any
different for the Linux versions.
*One thing commonly left unchanged is the Field of View. An FoV fine for
consoles can cause nausea when played on Windows, because the Windows player is
sitting closer to the screen.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

And Linux can be made very lightweight (Lubuntu, etc) so all your CPU
horses can be thrown at your favorite game!

Though success is not guaranteed by a long shot, it
would be incredible if
Linux caught on as a gaming platform,
liberating the world at large from
dependence on M$FT.
Certainly as people move to Windows 8 and beyond in the
next
decade, now is the time for all to decide - do they want to
become
hostage to M$FT's new plan for world domination, or
do they want
freedom?
BTW: For those who don't want Linux for anything besides
gaming, they have two options: dual booting, or Linux in
some VM or
Hypervisor. I was wondering if somebody could
hazard an opinion if the later is
capable of delivering the
performance ones expects? [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
