I've never been to prison, though engineering school seemed
like it at times. I read Tracy Kidder's book in 1981 (found
it in the University bookshop).
Since I can't locate it anymore I checked in the local
library catalogue and they don't have it either. I'll try to
summarize the comment. As I recall, Kidder was reporting a
mirthful comment from a DG engineer that their concrete
block headquarters was as far from architecturally designed
as possible - in fact it was designed in-house by company
engineers.
Certainly, the point is made (in that book) that the reason
for the spartan design was simply to impress on potential
investors that, and I quote from thirty-year old memory
here, "the company would not accumulate a crippling load of
debt". But I can't give a page reference. Yet.
