Bloomberg on FTC-Google Action; anything we can do?

The main thing here is visiting, calling and writing letters to (in that order of priority) your own Congressmen and Senators and explaining very clearly what is wrong here.

The FTC is clearly involved in a political prosecution. First Apple and Microsoft create a cartel to exclude others from the touch phone market. The FTC ignores them. Then Google attempts to introduce competition to that market; the FTC attacks. Clearly something wrong.

Letters should be short and clear. Concentrate on things lke a) damage to jobs in your area b) general damage to the economy c) freedom and justice. Be sure to know about the subjects you point out to them and not to rant.

Mention things like

  • Motorola has made it's patents available for all to use, Apple refuses to do so. Forcing Motorola to have lower prices punishes them for good work.
  • The US needs to keep up in Smartphones - the patents are blocking the US from getting access to the same advanced phones available in the rest of the world.
  • the groups which called for this are Microsoft funded Astroturfing organisations (you need to back this up with specific information) and have little real grassroots support.
  • Google provides great services for consumers - Microsoft is deliberately trying to block access to those by e.g. locking it's search button to Bing.

I wrote a letter to FTC...
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, November 02 2012 @ 10:34 AM EDT
This is a slightly edited version of what I wrote to the FTC. I have removed my
personally identifiable info.

===============================

Dear FTC,

... I have NO affiliation with Google, but I do own a Android smartphone and
Android tablet.

However, I am writing to you in *favor* of Google, in light of news that the FTC
will be investigating or filing a lawsuit against Google in two separate cases:
1. Search dominance
2. Patent abuse

If you do investigate Google - I request you to investigate Microsoft and Apple
for far worse anti-competitive behavior.

...

I realize my e-mail may have little impact, but I thought I should write in
anyway.

SEARCH DOMINANCE: I - like others - use Google because of choice. If anything, I
believe the FTC should be looking into how Microsoft is forcing Windows users to
use Internet Explorer and Bing upon Windows users.

Worried about Google having 66% market share and others less? I actually think
Google's search market share might be more if Microsoft was not forcing down its
Internet Explorer browser and less-featured Bing search engine upon users.

In fact, I hope that the FTC can investigate Microsoft for forcing its products
like Internet Explorer and Bing upon end users who use Windows. Like the
European Commission did.

PATENT "ABUSE": I understand that the FTC is concerned over so-called
FRAND/RAND abuse by Google/Motorola in the smartphone patent wars.

But consider this: I own a Samsung phone and a HTC tablet, and these two
companies are reportedly paying $15 per device to Microsoft over what I will
call bogus patents ... because its cheaper for them to pay Microsoft the patent
royalties than fight them in court.

Apparently Microsoft will make $444 million from these royalties in one year:
http://www.winrumors.com/analyst-claims-microsoft-generates-444-million-each-yea
r-from-android-patents/

That's coming from consumers like me, who are unable to fight the bogus patent
charges that Microsoft charges Android makers.

And Apple is demanding much, much more in similar patent claims against Android
makers.

If anything, I request you to investigate Microsoft and Apple. While they don't
have FRAND/RAND patents, their patents are as standards-essential to the
smartphone/tablet industry today as other RAND patents.

Again, this e-mail may not go anywhere, and I tried to keep this brief (there is
so much more info about these topics that I could not fit into this e-mail) but
I humbly request the FTC to consider these issues - if you are going to
investigate Google, please investigate Microsoft/Apple for their
anti-competitive behavior as well.

Thank you and regards,
