Cash isn't quite the same
Authored by: Anonymous on Sunday, November 04 2012 @ 02:11 PM EST
Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities was ~ $121 bn - so yes, they
could theoretically clear out their total liabilities, but as my brother pointed
out: he could clear off his mortgage, but it is better for his credit rating to
have one and to regularly pay the peppercorn amount each month.

Long-term liabilities was ~ $17 bn, making short-term liabilities ~ $41bn -
still not essentially no debt (only essentially no debt in that it could clear
the short-term liabilities with its cash, cash equivalents and marketable
securities; some of the long-term liabilities may be impossible to clear now,
along with contingent liabilities).

The $118 bn equity is what people have invested in the company for shares. That
has been used to fund the long-term assets, etc.
