IMHO those should NOT be counting machines, though. They should be *sorting*
machines.
Get your paper ballots. Feed them through a *sorting* machine that separates
them by vote cast. Then weigh them :-)
If it's a close call you now simply have to scan a pile of votes to make sure
they're identical, and count them to make sure you've got the number right.
Simples.
Cheers,

I have to wonder if the reason some people imagine so many
problems is that they have a "solution" they want implemented.
Scanners are audited in my area, touch screen machined have
print outs that the voter has to verify before the ballot is
cast. If those printouts were off we would have read it in
the news all day long. But its never been reported.
There are ways of cheating at every type of voting, none are
safe. Should we stop voting then?[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

We have Iphones, Android Phones, Tablet Computers that all
just work. These implement complex touchscreen gestures
(swipe, pinch bla bla bla ) and they just work reliably all
of the time. Highly successfull products.
Whats more: we all have been using electronic banking
machines for the longest time now and they are extremely
reliable. Whoever heard of a electronic banking machine that
somehow added or subtracted wrong, calculated the
balance wroing or that did not provide an accurate account
statement? I sure haven't.
Sooo what in the world can be soooo hard about designing a
reliable and auditable voting machine in the year 2012?
Maybe Google and Apple should have a contest to see who can
design the best APP for it, and put up some prize money.
Or could it be that the problem is that our government is
involved in it?? It sure looks that way. There is absolutely
no good reason why these problems are not getting fixed
permanantly, except of course if these problems are
intentional.
This seeds massive distrust, especially in the government
and the authorities. I would actually expect something like
that to happen in some rogue Banana Republic, but isen't
this supposed to be the "greatest democracy on earth"? [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
