Why not suggest something useful, like going the same way as Chrome and doing a
custom setup build of Gentoo?

You need to update your specs. Modern flash components have a life of more than
100,000 erase cycles per block, writes are unlimited. Using a half decent file
system with wear leveling, even with thousands of writes a minute, a flash chip
can easily last longer than the computer it is plugged into. I am currently
writing code for a product with 128MB of flash. Worst case estimates are that
the chip will last 75 years.
