Unfortunately none of the parties want to correct the issues that cause low
voter turnout.
That would involve making who you vote for actually matter. With the current
two flavours of exactly the same thing, it doesn't matter which of them wins, so
no-one bothers to vote.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

The problem, from what I heard, this year
was that in Republican-controlled states,
deliberate steps were taken to make it
discouraging to vote, particularly in areas
where Democratic voters were expected.
It was a really shocking thing, kind of like
it used to be in the US South, with the poll
tax.
I was glad to see it didn't work, even if I
have no politics in terms of preferences in
general. You don't want anyone to win like
that. And it was nice to see that 6 billionaires
can't buy an election, even when they really mean
to and even when they can hide their contributions,
thanks to Citizens United.
I expect to see some changes now in both areas.

Not over here (UK). Legally the polls close at 10pm. End of.
Although I think the Presiding Officers have - on their own initiative - locked
the doors at 10 and allowed the people inside to vote.
But then, long lines to vote are rare. In fact, I think it was the last
election, one London borough hit the headlines for having long lines.
Unfortunately, a lot of people there did lose their vote, because the polling
stations couldn't cope.
I think there was a fair bit of fuss about "why did people leave it so late
to vote", but it was then pointed out that the queues first formed early in
the day, and remained so ALL DAY. Loads of people tried to vote several times,
and each time gave up to come back later because of the long queues. There were
just too many people for each polling station to handle.
Cheers,
