Companies have been attacking the freedoms of open source for a very long time.
This is bullying, and it needs to stop.

If it cost millions to create the tech and if giving it to
standards meant losing that money. Why would anyone
contribute?

No. It costs a lot of money to develop the technologies presented in the
standards. I can't imagine a company agreeing to share their system for
modulating 17 frequencies of light to pass a terabit per second down a
single mode fiber, instead of just selling it themselves as a proprietary
solution incompatible with everything else except through their proprietary
adapter. That was the bad old way. It gave us Token Ring and FDDI, and if
the trend had stood we would all still be waiting for broadband.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
