Yeah, communism and socialism have been SUCH great successes after all.
The basic tenet of capitalism is that the product of your own labor is
yours by right, and that NO ONE has the right to take it away from you.
Any economic system that is not based on that fundamental value is
just slavery with a fancy name.
The proper duty of government is to ensure that what is yours is not
taken from you without your consent. That includes maintaining military
forces, to keep foreign powers from invading, and criminal and civil law
enforcement, to prevent robbery and fraud. It includes regulation of
products and services that you can't reasonably evaluate on your own.
It does not include placing burdensome obligations on private enterprise
just because YOU think it would be a good idea. That is taking what is
theirs without their consent.
Did any of those cell phone providers guarantee that they would provide
uninterrupted service during the biggest hurricane in U.S. history? That
thing was a thousand miles across! It extended from New York to Milwaukee!
It produced conditions that have never been seen before in many places.
How could anybody have known to prepare for that?
Sadly, finding somebody to blame when Bad Things Happen seems to have
become the new American Way. That, and demanding that the Gummint Make
It All Better. Which requires that everybody pay for something that few
people want or need.
