Any serious, large software company _has_ to have in-house linux expertise.

Microsoft has released Skype 4.1 for Linux
Authored by: tiger99 on Saturday, November 17 2012 @ 12:00 PM EST
I would be most concerned about the probable security holes. Linux does not need any trashware from M$.

There are FOSS things similar to Skype, which need more publicity, so they will be used. GN U Free Call, QutePhone,Reverse engineered Skype (reverse engineering is legal in many countries including the EU, for the purpose of interoperability), Ekiga and doubtless more which I have not found yet.

As it happens, I have a need for such a thing myself and will be looking into what works over the next few months.

Microsoft is taking a "hands off" approach with Skype. Go to the
Skype.comp web site an you won't find any Microsoft logos or branding. They have
recognized that the "Microsoft" name is a negative to many people.

As a result, it doesn't get used on my PC.
