From www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/11/12/old-dog-old-tricks-ms-l
ocks-directx-11-1-to-win-8/:
It’s been a while since Microsoft
pulled the ol’ ‘oh no, this new version of DirectX couldn’t possibly work on
earlier versions of Windows’ scamgasm, but as the relatively friendly age of
Windows 7 is overshadowed by the dawning of the firm’s desperate desire to make
Windows 8 a cross-platform goliath/software shop, an old habit has returned. The
next version of DirectX might be a purely iterative one, but if you ever look a
game that requires DirectX 11.1 you’ll be looking at a game that won’t run on
Windows 7 or earlier.
May I remind all parties that DirectX
doesn't work on Android or iOS, where Android has more than 73 % of the mobile
market. The mobile market is also eating into the desktop market...
If
I'm not entirely mistaken, Microsoft is killing itself actually launching that
horrible foetus later named Windows 8. Here is one remark:
I don’t know if Microsoft
anticipated that Windows 8 would be an instant hit. But it’s such a radical
departure from any version of Windows before it that I’m not the least bit
surprised by the possibility that relatively few consumers are rushing to be
early adopters.
With some luck there will be more foot shot
opportunities here.

It's funny tht the author calls the new 4 core, 1 - 1.5GHz ARMs with 2GB of RAM
"resource constrained". Is that how Windows focused people think?
Altough my desktops are better than that (I brought them for cientific
computing), my laptop is bellow those specs, and except when testing the
simulations I brought the desktops to run, it's really fast enough.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

PJ: People died in that storm. Life is a Constitutional right as
well, one that trumps the right to do business any way you feel like it, one
would hope.
That's the narcissistic (or worse) attitude of large
corporations towards their customers. For them running a business is not about
adding value for customers, it's about adding value for executives and
shareholders. Had they worked for their customers their attitude would have been
better.
Perhaps VAT should not be on sales but on bonuses and dividends,
the receivers of those seem to be the real customers. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Why Cell Phones Went Dead After Hurricane Sandy..
I'm going to go off at a
tangent at what PJ said in the hope that it joins up.
Up until about the 15
century in England, the populace was going between times of plenty and
starvation. Then something happen. 'Fat' was built into the food supply. If
2 or 3 years of bad harvests came about, their was a adequate supply of
'seed' for the populace to re-plant and pick themselves up again.
Going off at a tangent again. In the UK we have National Health Insurance.
Another form of 'fat'. If the 'bread-winner' becomes ill, it no longer means
that his children loses out on higher education. It means that their
children can then go on to being productive members of the society.
We
(in the UK) consider the US claim that compulsory 'health insurance' is
'socialism/communism' rather odd as the benefits to the Nation are obvious.
Right. Lets stop now beating around the bush and address 'Sandy.'
In the
UK we have a tradition of putting a little money away for a 'rainy day' . We
build 'fat' into our life plan. No-one over forty can say that they did not
need to call on those funds to pick themselves back up after a rainy day....
and wasn't Sandy a rainy day!
Civilisation is about building 'fat' into
our society so in the event of a natural catastrophe we can cope and
recover.
Good development of communications in ancient times made
Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome etc., great empires.
Good
and reliable communication is the foundation of any viable civilisation. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

We can legislate that the telephone companies make cell phone coverage perfect
100% of the time, but no one can afford that. There are towers in major
metropolitan areas, and they rely on infrastructure to work. Power, and network
connections have to be there. Stuff happens, winds blow, the rain comes, and
stuff breaks.
Was the land line 100% reliable, no. I remember snow storms that knocked out the
land line phones. People died, and stuff happens.
Go somewhere like
<a
href="https://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode
=&q=silvergate+MT&aq=&sll=36.719249,-93.360648&sspn=1.510276,1.6
45203&vpsrc=6&t=h&ie=UTF8&hq=silvergate+MT&hnear=&radius
=15000&ll=45.018396,-109.937096&spn=0.02081,0.025706&z=15&ei=_Py
nUIm_HqXzwQHDi4CwCA&pw=2">Silvergate MT</a>
Spotty coverage at best, probably nothing to rely on. People live very well
there, but a half dozen tourists are killed there every winter in avalanches.
There are other options. Ham radio is quite reliable, if you prepare. Have
portable antennas and power supplies. If you need help, there are resources.
Make the preparations you need, and then adapt.

Does Apple's HTC Patents Settlement Doom The Samsung
Case?
According to the TWSE, foreign institutional investors served
as net buyers of 2.51 million HTC shares Thursday. The maxiumum
rise in one day the the exchange allows - 7 % - the sahre price reached that
limit of 7% - in one trading day!... in contrast to a history of a long fall off
in
value.
http://www.taiwannews.com.tw/etn/news_content.php%3fid=2068637
And
then 'suddenly' Apple settled. Wow, that was lucky for for those foreign
institutional investors wasn't it. Look at the dates! 9th November 2012.
Oh, do I smell Sushi ! Of course not – just coincidence. Even Apple would not be
that stupid. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Do servers actually store real passwords these days? I thought they generally
used a hash of the password which should be extremely difficult to reverse back
into a password.

Seems the new WinPhone8 OS was rushed out
the door before it was ready...
Early adopters of Windows
Phone 8 hardware
are complaining that it reboots at random, up to several
times a day, and that they're not being offered any prospect
of a quick
fix.
The complaints relate specifically to the HTC 8X and, to
a lesser
extent, Nokia's Lumia 920, with Windows Phone 8
locking up or randomly
rebooting on both devices for no
discernible reason. Forum users on
Microsoft.com and
WPCentral have been gathering examples in an attempt to
narrow down the problem, but with limited success. The
forums run to seven
pages, and are joined by those at Nokia
where users report similar problems.

Really, we are linking to a website with apple in it's name posting a pro-apple

coppied onto groklaw not wanting to give them more clicks, but that alone seemed
